The DrunkDuck Happy Hour Meetup Event at San Diego Comic-Con was fantastic! DrunkDuckers from all over met at the DD gathering on the first full day of the Con to attach handles and webcomics to names and faces. For one evening, it was a real-life version of DD’s tagline — “The Webcomics Community.” Snaps from the meetup are on WOWIO’s Flickr stream, along with other photos from SDCC and the Comic Cruise.

Thanks to all of the DDers who could make it — your presence was greatly appreciated. The DrunkDuck crew and other miscellaneous WOWIO-ites had a great time meeting and talking with all of you!

Special shout-outs for two DD members — theJimmy and nightmarelunatic. Be sure to check out their webcomics on DrunkDuck.com by clicking on the panels at right.

Hip Hop Chronicles

Hip Hop Chronicles — Read the Press Release from WOWIO and Universal Music GroupHip hop artists like Tupac, DMX, Eric B. and Rakim have written powerful modern poetry — lyrical storytelling that creates a living image of urban experience. Graphic novels, too, capture and tell their stories in a uniquely compelling way, amplified by the fluid flow of artwork into a form that transcends the written words.

We’re excited to announce that WOWIO is teaming up with Universal Music Group to meld these worlds in the graphic novel series, Hip Hop Chronicles. “I love the idea of developing deep, rich story concepts from non-traditional sources such as music, and the creation of graphic novels based on the lyrics of some of music’s most dynamic and iconic lyricists provides a vibrant canvas for blending these two storytelling mediums,” said Brian Altounian, CEO of WOWIO.

Look for a full preview on WEvolt in August, ahead of the download release on WOWIO in September!

Celebrating the Indies

With Comic-Con upon us, we wanted to take a few moments out to acknowledge and celebrate the indie publishers and creators whose creativity and love of the art help make the comics universe so vibrant.

Each day, indies add their titles to the WOWIO mix. Among the stream of new publishers joining WOWIO recently is NBM Publishing, whose titles include Victorian-era crime remixes like Jack the Ripper, the horror-comedy Boneyard and the powerful Iraq War graphic novel War Fix.

David Miller and the eponymous David Miller Studios has brought back and carried on the late Dave (X-men co-creator) Cockrum’s Futurians in a series of new stories, starting with recent WOWIO addition Avatar of the Futurians #1 (and check out the cover by Flash and Legion of Super-Heroes artist Greg Laroque!). David will be appearing on WowioTV at Comic-Con this week, so keep an eye out for him.

Creators Mike Dubisch and Carolyn Watson Dubisch and their Abigail Books imprint have just uploaded their first titles on WOWIO, including the all-ages The People that Melt in the Rain, with its rainy and magical (and quite beautifully rendered) pencil-and-watercolor world. They’ve added a Spanish-language version, too.

These are a few among the constellation of new indies on WOWIO, with new titles coming on every day. We’re happy to create a venue for these artists, creators and publishers, and you’ll be seeing a lot more of them over the next couple of days as WowioTV begins its live coverage at Comic-Con. See you there!
